Event description:
The protection of the environment in relation to armed conflicts has become an increasingly critical concern in today’s world. With devastating armed conflicts raging in various regions of the globe, the destructive consequences on both humanity and the environment are witnessed daily through various media outlets. The International Law Commission (ILC) has meticulously formulated a comprehensive compendium of 27 Draft Principles, aimed at enhancing environmental safeguards during times of conflict. These principles encompass a spectrum of measures to be undertaken prior to, during, and subsequent to armed conflicts.
To delve into this pressing topic, the Institute of International Law and International Relations of the University of Graz is organising a workshop on the 27th September 2023. The workshop, exploring the ILC Draft Principles, is led by Ambassador Marja Lehto, an esteemed former member of the ILC who currently serves at the Finnish Foreign Ministry in the area of public international law. Renowned experts in environmental law, Prof. Charlotte Kreuter-Kirchhof from the University of Düsseldorf, and the law of armed conflict, Prof. Martha M. Bradley from the University of Johannesburg, will also provide valuable insights.
Students, faculty members, scholars and practitioners with a keen interest in environmental protection, particularly in the context of armed conflicts, are all welcome to attend. Scheduled from 12:00 to 17:00 hours (in person only), the event will commence with a welcoming luncheon reception, fostering an environment conducive to meaningful discussions and the exchange of ideas. There will also be a well-deserved coffee break during the workshop, which will provide a refreshing respite for further insightful conversations.
