As part of the "Telders Moot Court Competition", students are given the opportunity to gain an insight into the practice of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague and to conduct a simulated ICJ court hearing based on a fictitious case.
Even before this year's fictitious case was announced, the team for the 47th Telders Moot Court Competition of the Karl-Franzens-University Graz (KFU) took part in a pre-moot workshop at the Eötvös Loránd University Budapest (ELTE) from 17 October to 20 October 2023. Together with the participants from Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) and the participants from Eötvös Loránd University Budapest (ELTE), a fictitious case was developed in cross-university teams. In the course of this, the participants were able to gain important and valuable experience in terms of convincing argumentation and written case development for the subsequent work on this year's case.
After two days of preparation, the participants were able to test their rhetorical skills for the first time in a simulated court hearing in front of judges. For this purpose, Univ.-Prof. Dr Erika de Wet, LL.M. (Harvard) (KFU), Ass.-Prof. Dr Zolta Buda (ELTE), Mag. Anna Lena Hörzer, BA (KFU) and Wiss.-Mit. Marie Schetter (HHU) were available. Through spontaneous and detailed questions, the participants were prepared in the best possible way for the upcoming preparations for the competition. During a joint dinner, the participants also had the opportunity to exchange ideas and get to know the judges of the workshop personally.
The Institute of Public International Law and International Relations would like to take this opportunity to thank the Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest in particular for organising and holding the workshop. Special thanks also go to the team coaches Univ.-Prof. Dr Charlotte Kreuter-Kirchhof and Wiss.-Mit. Marie Schetter (for the HHU team) and A.o. Univ.-Prof. Dr Gábor Kajtár, LL.M. (Cantab) (for the ELTE team).
This year's Telders Moot Court will be contested by Sophie Lutzmayr and Natascha Gojkovic for the Karl-Franzens-University. They have been preparing intensively for the moot court since November 2023 and are currently working on drafting elaborate memorials. The Graz team is coached by Prof Dr Erika de Wet, LL.M (Harvard) and Anna-Lena Hörzer, BA.
