Government recognition is an increasingly controversial issue in international law, as illustrated by recent events in Venezuela, Afghanistan, and Myanmar. This international panel of three distinguished experts will discuss the role of democratic legitimacy in the recognition of governments, and whether it has replaced the traditional criteria of effective control. The conversation will focus on the legal and practical consequences of invoking a right to democratic governance and the role of international organizations, such as the United Nations, in the recognition of a government. This event will be moderated by Benjamin Salas Kantor (LLM '23) and will feature: Rebecca Barber, research Fellow with the Asia Pacific Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, Erika de Wet, Professor of International Law and Head of the Institute of International Relations in the Faculty of Law, University of Graz, Austria, and Brad Roth, who holds a joint appointment with the Department of Political Science at Wayne State University.
