Internship in The Hague
A look behind the scenes of the International City of Peace and Justice
The Hague, also known as the International City of Peace and Justice, functions as a global hub for international law and diplomacy. It is home to a variety of international organizations, ranging from dispute resolution bodies like the International Court of Justice and the Permanent Court of Arbitration to EU agencies like Eurojust or Europol. In this setting, University Assistant Anna Hörzer had the chance to take a look behind the scenes of the day-to-day practice of international law and justice at one of the many institutions located in the city.
An internship at the International Criminal Court provided her with the unique opportunity to gain valuable insights into the Tribunal's significant work and to deepen her understanding of international criminal law and related fields. Through intensive engagement with experts in her research areas and access to the specialized resources available in The Hague, Ms. Hörzer was also able to gather critical insights for her dissertation project, which focuses on omission-based liability and due diligence obligations to prevent war crimes at the intersection of international criminal law and state responsibility. Alongside her practical and academic work, the stay allowed her to visit other key institutions, including the International Court of Justice and the Permanent Court of Arbitration, both located in the Peace Palace, as well as the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals. She was also able to participate in various diplomatic and academic events, which allowed her to connect with a range of individuals from the international community.
Overall, the stay was an incredibly enriching, formative experience and a unique opportunity to gain insight into the workings behind the scenes of the City of International Peace and Justice. Sincere appreciation is expressed to all those who contributed to making this stay possible.
