Between 28 August and 8 September 2024, Prof. Erika de Wet visited Japan on invitation of the Japanese Society of International Law (JSIL), the Foreign Ministry of Japan (MOFA) and the Kyoto University, Faculty of Law. On 29 August, she participated in a panel discussion that formed part of the MOFA’s second Tokyo International Law Seminar 2024 . Together with Prof. Dapo Akande (Oxford University) and Prof. Makane Mbuenge (University of Geneva), the panel discussed ‘The Rule of Law in the International Community – Perspectives from the Global South’.
On 3 September, Prof. de Wet participated in the Honourable Shigeru Oda Commemorative Lectures, together with Mari Katayanagi (Hiroshima University) and Prof. Ryosuke Sato (Seijo University). The lectures, which focused on collective security, took place during the 2024 annual meeting of the JSIL that was this year held in Fukuoka.
Prof. de Wet’s 10-day academic tour of Japan was concluded with an international law seminar hosted by the Faculty of Law of the University of Kyoto. During the seminar, Prof. de Wet and other international law scholars discussed challenges pertaining to the teaching of international law and engaged with some of Prof. de Wet’s writings in the area of collective security.
