Presentation by Christian Pippan at ICON•S 2024 in Madrid

At the ICON•S 2024 conference, the Annual Meeting of the International Society for Public Law, held in Madrid, Assistant Professor Dr. Christian Pippan delivered a lecture entitled "One More Round for the Nation: The Evasion of Presidential Term Limits in International Legal Perspective". The lecture, which formed part of a panel discussion on the theme of "Liberal Democracies under Pressure," addressed the issue of circumventing constitutional term limits in presidential and semi-presidential systems by incumbent heads of state from an international law perspective. The focus was on recent legal developments within the Inter-American system (particularly the OAS) and the African legal space (particularly the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States). This topic is part of a broader inquiry into the possibilities and limitations of international law in addressing the erosion of democracy and the rule of law at the national level, which is a special research area of the presenter.
