On 15 March, Prof. Wolfgang Benedek has been appointed on as one of three experts, along with Professor Marco Sassóli (Geneva Academy of Humanitarian Law and Human Rights) and Prof. Veronika Bílkova (Charles University Prague) on a mission to investigate violations of international humanitarian law (IHL) and international human rights law (IHRL) in Ukraine for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). The mission is conducted under the OSCE Moscow Mechanism at the request of Ukraine supported by 45 participating States. The report by the three experts will be submitted within three weeks after the establishment of the mission.
Prof. Benedek is the former Head of the Institute of International Law and International Relations at the University of Graz. Benedek has already conducted similar missions on human rights violations in Chechnya (2018) and Belarus( 2020). The European Training and Research Centre for Human Rights and Democracy at the University of Graz will support the mission within its possibilities.
