"State-Centred Interpretations of Property Rights"
Investment protection was originally conceived to shield corporations from capital exporting states from political risk in developing countries. Increasingly, states of the European Union find ways to escape the obligation to grant compensation by narrowing the definition of what constitutes an expropriation, relying heavily on state-centred arguments to deprive individuals of their private property. This shows that international law presents an indispensable layer of protection for individual rights.
