Assistant Professor Dr. Christiane Ahlborn, LL.M. (Harvard) co-organized the Early-Career Researchers Workshop New Voices in International Law, which took place at Trinity College Dublin on 22 May 2026. The event brought together emerging scholars and established academics for a day of discussion on current developments in international law, creating an important platform for academic exchange across institutions and disciplines.
The workshop addressed a broad range of contemporary topics, including collective defence in Europe, migration and human rights, apartheid discourse, international humanitarian law, international criminal law, and political economy approaches to international law. The programme opened with welcoming remarks by Mike Becker and Oran Doyle, Head of School at Trinity College Dublin, followed by a keynote address by Mary Lawlor, former United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders. Across four thematic panels, participants explored pressing legal and political questions facing the international community today.
As part of her involvement in the workshop, Ass.-Prof. Dr. Ahlborn chaired the panel International Law in Europe and served as commentator in discussions on both European legal developments and political economy approaches to international law, with a particular focus on sustaintability and climate change. In these roles, she contributed to the academic exchange between presenters and participants and supported the workshop’s focus on fostering dialogue among early-career researchers and established scholars.
The workshop underscored the importance of international scholarly collaboration and the promotion of emerging voices in legal research. By bringing together researchers working on diverse questions in contemporary international law, New Voices in International Law made a valuable contribution to ongoing academic debate.
